Alexander H. Sheppe, M.D. is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City, and an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Sheppe is passionate about and is a nationally recognized expert in the assessment and treatment of personality disorders in adolescents and young adults. Dr. Sheppe has experience with all major psychotherapeutic treatments for personality disorders including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mentalization-based treatment (MBT), and especially transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) where he adapts the treatment to adolescents (TFP-A). He teaches postgraduate courses at Columbia University on the assessment and treatment of youth with personality disorders, supervises postgraduate trainees in psychodynamic psychotherapy, engages in clinical research and publishes on TFP-A, and lectures at international conferences. Dr. Sheppe is a member of Emotions Matter's Board of Directors.
Brianna is an 18-year-old from Philadelphia who recently graduated high school. She has lived experience with BPD and has been struggling with BPD for a while now and has dealt with self-destructive behaviors and suicidal tendencies. Although Brianna has multiple diagnoses, borderline personality disorder is the one that has affected her life the most. Brianna hopes to help educate others about BPD in adolescents and how BPD can affect someone’s life.
Robert is Brianna’s father and has firsthand experience supporting a teenager with BPD. Robert and his wife first discovered Emotions Matter three years ago after Brianna was diagnosed with BPD. Learning more about BPD and through the support of Emotions Matter has helped Robert become a more supportive and understanding parent.
Varun is someone with borderline personality disorder who has achieved long-term recovery and is dedicated to helping others with the disorder find healing and peace. He currently serves as an Emotions Matter Board member. Varun's primary focuses are advocacy, destigmatization, and sharing clear, practical knowledge about BPD and strategies for managing and overcoming its symptoms.
Samar is a pharmacy student at Mercer University who is passionate about mental health and aims to be a psychiatric pharmacist in a clinical setting.
